Selected Plays Vol. VII: It Starts with a Death [2021]
In 2001-2 an extraordinary national multimedia communication campaign took place in Zimbabwe. The use of theatre in development communication projects is nothing special but one which aims to inform, educate and consult the people on recently passed legal legislation would be hard to find.<!--more--> While the use of theatre in other aspects of development such as the environment, health, agriculture and gender are relatively common, the law has seldom featured. Their publication fills a gap in Development Communication literature.Selected Plays VII is different from previous selections in that the plays selected are examples of what is called Participatory Theatre Communications [PTC] and as such were research and communication instruments. However they have been crafted in such a way that they make for moving and enjoyable theatre. The play, "It Starts with a Death", is an imaginative and human demonstration of the need to write a will and how to write it. Women and children are often the prime victims of legal abuse and the new laws were aimed at protecting them. "Guarding the Guardian" looks at the abuse of the estate of orphaned children and "A Woman’s Will" their intense vulnerability to legal abuse. The distortion of traditional customs relating to inheritance is at the bottom of much of this abuse and "Inheriting a Wife" deals with this issue.
