Terrorism and the coronavirus are curtailing the activities of Burkina Faso’s only permanent theatre, the Carrefour International Theatre of Ouagadougou, or CITO for short. The play, La Patrie ou la Mort [Fatherland or Death] by Burkinabe playwright and actor Mahamadou Tindano, was the 48th production of the theatre, which was founded in 1996. ‘You can’t ignore the topic of violence,’ Tindano, the director, says: ‘As artists, we must react.’
